Temporary John Muir Way diversions required for cable works

As the Inch Cape substation nears completion, some extended and weekend working as well as brief diversions of the John Muir Way will be required at Inch Cape’s Cockenzie construction site in the coming months.

The community near Inch Cape’s onshore substation at Cockenzie may notice the project team preparing the landfall area for the installation of the project’s second cable. The activity, including ground works, deliveries of materials such as ready‑mix concrete, and construction vehicle movements, requires extended working hours during weekdays (0700–1900) and working on weekends during late April, May and June.

Letters have been sent to nearby residents and business to let them know that, as well as the extended working, the project will also need to set up temporary diversions of the John Muir Way. In the interests of public and worker safety, there will be three temporary diversions in May, June and August, with each diversion clearly signposted and lasting for a few days.

Current dates of temporary diversions of John Muir Way:

Week commencing 4 May 2026 – Grouting operations for the first export cable (approximately four days)

Week commencing 2 June 2026 – Pull-in of second export cable (approximately four days)

Week commencing 10 August 2026 – Grouting operations for second export cable (approximately four days)

At all other times the John Muir Way will remain open though it may be narrowed temporarily in some sections.

The diversions are required to maintain safety for workers and passers-by, and the teams at the site will continue to work safely, efficiently and with regard for the local community.
