Hamstra-Ops Ltd

Aberdeen-based Hamstra-Ops executes engineering and support services for the offshore renewables sector. Partnering with main contractors, Hamstra-Ops provides full-service packages, providing the people and equipment needed to complete specific scopes of work. For Inch Cape, the team was awarded the subcontract for the shore landing of the first of the project’s two export cables via marine contractor Enshore Subsea.

A pull-in winch was placed in the transition joint bay at landfall in Cockenzie. The winch wire was taken through a pre-installed duct in the seawall, out to the cable installation vessel CMOS Installer where it was connected to the export cable. The export cable was winched to shore, floating on pillows, and pulled in to the transition joint bay where it rested on sand bags. The floating pillows were later removed by divers, allowing the export cable to settled on the seabed.

The Hamstra-Ops team successfully and safely completed the task less than 18 hours after the start of operations, on schedule and within budget.

Outcome

The pull-in of Inch Cape’s first export cable was also the first job of this type for Hamstra-Ops in the UK. The support the team provided to Enshore Subsea has opened doors to negotiations with other key Inch Cape contractors for further work opportunities on the project’s construction. Pending positive outcomes from these negotiations, the company could potentially more than double its current size.

Quote from Hamstra-Ops:

“Inch Cape, like other offshore wind farms, is a complex project with contractors and sub-contractors needing to work safely together on multi-level activities, and managing their own priorities. Hamstra-Ops was pleased to contribute our part and to gain experience working with the expert and pragmatic Inch Cape team.
