George Brown and Sons

Leith-based George Brown and Sons provided 24-hour labour services to carry out demobilisation works for each of the 14 heavy transport vessels which arrived in Leith Docks with components for the offshore wind farm. A key part of the role was the removal of sea fastenings to facilitate offloading of the transition pieces, monopile and jacket foundations, and pin piles.
Up to 15 skilled and semi-skilled personnel worked continuous day and night shifts with all necessary plant, materials and consumables to facilitate safe and timely deck operations. Alongside an awareness of port operations, effective and collaborative communication with key personnel was imperative to maximise tidal and weather windows.

Outcome
Inch Cape has been a tremendous opportunity for the engineering services company. The impact goes far beyond the successful and safe offloading of the cargo and even the immediate creation of an additional 20 skilled roles and purchasing impact on the local economy, for example with the likes of 1000 bottles of oxygen and acetylene utilised.
The project offered valuable training and development opportunities across job roles whether apprentices honing skills, experienced welders gaining additional coding and confined space training or supervisory staff gaining the necessary operational experience to advance into management roles.
Whilst well versed in large scale demobilisations, the project provided the company with insights into a much more collaborative way of working, relying on numerous teams both remote and on site.
Highlighting opportunities to develop internal communications between management and site personnel it also strengthened already long standing and established commercial relationships whilst showcasing the firm’s ability to make effective and timely decisions under pressure to ensure operational success.
