Gateshead-made cathodic protection
OES Group has been contracted by Inch Cape for the design, manufacture, install and commissioning of an impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) system to protect the project’s external and internal submerged foundations from corrosion. Inch Cape has a total of 54 monopile foundations and transition pieces, each requiring impressed current cathodic protection.
OES Group was awarded the contract in early 2025 and started immediate fabrication of approximately 20 systems per month at the company’s new 5000 square-metre facility in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. The scope of work includes installation at the foundation fabrication yards in China and at the marshalling port in Leith, Edinburgh. OES Group will also be working offshore on further installation, and on the commissioning.
Outcomes
This contract has enabled the creation of two new roles with the company so has contributed to local employment creation. In terms of the technology itself, an innovative new method of ICCP anode installation is being developed in collaboration with the Inch Cape project team. Learnings from this project are likely to be leveraged by the company for future orders.
